Eating this fruit reduces the risk of dementia in middle age

Among many fruits, strawberries have long been loved by people because of their lovely appearance, unique sweet and sour taste and rich nutritional value. Scientific research also continues to reveal that a variety of compounds in strawberries have many benefits for our health, especially in preventing Alzheimer’s disease and delaying aging.

Recently, Robert Krikorian et al. published a paper in nutrients entitled “Early Intervention in Cognitive Aging with Strawberry. The Supplementation of strawberries (Early Intake of strawberries to intervene in cognitive aging) study demonstrated the effect of long-term supplementation of strawberries in middle-aged adults in reducing dementia risk.

Strawberries prevent Alzheimer’s and aging

The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effects of long-term strawberry consumption on cognitive function in middle-aged adults. The study included 30 participants between the ages of 50 and 65 with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater (BMI over 25 is overweight) and mild cognitive decline.

Participants were asked to take daily doses of strawberry powder (which is made from dried, freeze-dried and ground whole fruit) for 12 weeks. Each 13-gram pack of strawberry powder provides 36.8 mg of anthocyanins, derived from 130 grams of whole fruit, equivalent to 1 cup of fresh strawberries, the California Strawberry Commission’s standard serving size), and cut out all berry fruits, juices, and extracts. A control group was given a placebo similar in appearance, taste and carbohydrate content to strawberry powder and containing fiber but no polyphenols. The main assessment measures included neurocognitive and emotional measures, as well as metabolic and anthropometric parameters. A total of three situation interviews were conducted at the beginning, middle and end of the experiment.

The results showed that in the cognitive domain, although strawberry supplementation did not lead to significant improvements in executive domain (p = 0.71), vocabulary acquisition (p = 0.14), verbal memory (p = 0.69), and visuospatial memory (p = 0.76), the strawberry group had relatively less interference in verbal learning and memory. F(1,27) = 5.69, p = 0.02, Cohen’s F = 0.45 (Figure 1). In addition, the strawberry group reported lower mood disorders than the control group, F(1,27) = 4.28, p = 0.04, Cohen’s F = 0.39 (Figure 2).

In terms of metabolic indicators, such as fasting blood glucose (p = 0.61), fasting insulin (p = 0.29), HOMA2-IR (p = 0.45), glycosylated hemoglobin (p = 0.67) and TG/HDL ratio (p = 0.85, p = 0.43), and anthropometric indicators, There were no significant differences in body weight (p = 0.17) and waist circumference (p = 0.34) between the strawberry and control groups. However, in terms of lower BMI (p = 0.10), there was a weak trend in the strawberry treatment group.

The findings suggest that supplementing with 130 grams of whole fruit strawberry powder daily can help reduce memory disturbances and depressive symptoms in overweight middle-aged adults. Anti-inflammatory substances such as anthocyanins in strawberries may be a major factor in these benefits.

Strawberry anti-aging treasure – Fisetin

In addition, strawberries also contain other beneficial ingredients, such as Fisetin. Fisetin, also known as “urushetin”, is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables that has anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, antioxidant and anti-aging properties, especially anti-aging effects.

Li Zhang et al. published a paper in Frontiers in Pharmacology entitled “Fisetin Alleviated Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis Partly by Rescuing The study of Alveolar Epithelial Cells From Senescence “(fisetin alleviates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis to a certain extent by rescuing the senescence of alveolar epithelial cells) further revealed the anti-aging mechanism of fisetin. The study demonstrated the anti-aging effects of fisetin both in vivo and in vitro.

First, the scientists looked at the effects of fisetin on mice with pulmonary fibrosis induced by bleomycin (BLM, a drug used to treat cancer). Pulmonary fibrosis is an age-related disease. The results showed that fisetin treatment significantly improved weight loss and lung pathological changes in mice, alleviated inflammatory cell infiltration, inflammatory factor expression, collagen deposition, and alveolar epithelial cell senescence. It also activated AMPK, a signaling pathway associated with anti-aging. This suggests that fisetin can inhibit BLM-induced alveolar epithelial cell senescence and inflammatory response in vivo, and effectively alleviate the development of pulmonary fibrosis.

To further validate these findings, the scientists adopted A549 cells as a model of alveolar epithelium and found that the results were consistent with previous experiments. Fisetin inhibited senescence and aging-related secretory phenotypes in alveolar epithelial cells, reduced fibroblast differentiation into myofibroblasts, and collagen deposition in fibroblasts, and this effect was blocked by AMPK inhibitor Compound C. This suggests that fisetin can alleviate BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis, which is related to the inhibition of TGFβ /Smad3 signaling by the regulation of AMPK/NF-κB signaling pathway and the reduction of alveolar epithelial cell senescence.

In general, strawberries contain a variety of beneficial substances, such as folic acid, potassium, fiber, plant sterols, polyphenols and feseketone, etc., high nutritional value, for the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and anti-aging has certain benefits, may wish to eat strawberries in the daily diet, so that delicious and healthy.
